The Assembly Judiciary Committee in its impeachment investigation of Gov. Andrew Cuomo creates a buffer that gains him time and the ability to manipulate its members in order to stay in power. It is unnecessary and overlaps Attorney General Letitia James’ proper probing into Cuomo’s affairs. At best, it is inefficient.
I hold Speaker of the Assembly Carl Heastie responsible for setting up this redundant mechanism. The committee will cause delay in coming to any conclusion as to impeachment, if it ever does, and will serve as a back channel for information that should not be given to Cuomo and his lawyers, enabling him to stay ahead of the game.
It will challenge James’ ability and lawful authority to conduct an independent investigation. If the Assembly doesn’t take this committee out of the picture, I would infer that the Albany democrats want to keep their compromised governor in office. They see that in his weakened condition, they have been able to get things done that he had blocked for a long time. That’s good. But watch out when he survives his current crises and returns to his predictably vengeful, strutting self.
