Monica Lewinsky is heavily involved in making Impeachment: American Crime Story, which details her affair with Bill Clinton and the ensuing scandal.
Impeachment: American Crime Story has consulted with Monica Lewinsky on every one of its season’s scripts. The true crime series is executive produced by Ryan Murphy, with the first season premiering in 2016 exploring the different aspects of the infamous, headlining O.J. murder trial. The FX anthology series followed that up with a second installment examining events that led up to the assassination of fashion designer, Gianni Versace. American Crime Story season 3 will continue the trend of true events from the 1990s focusing on Clinton-Lewinsky scandal during President Bill Clinton’s tenure in the White House, and his subsequent impeachment.

The season is based on the book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down A President, written by Jeffrey Toobin, who also wrote the book about the O.J. Simpson trial that inspired the first season of American Crime Story. Season 3 has an impressive cast with Clive Owen as President Clinton, Edie Falco as Hillary Clinton, and Beanie Feldstein as Lewinsky, with Sarah Paulson, Margo Martindale, Anthony Green, Annaleigh Ashford, Betty Gilpin, Billy Eichner, and Mira Sorvino also having significant parts.
Per Variety, Murphy comments that he has consulted with Lewinsky about the details of the season and that she has been majorly involvement with the process. Lewinsky will serve as a co-producer of Impeachment: American Crime Story and the political scandal will be told through her point of view. Murphy compares this season with the first installment of American Crime Story, going to state:
“She’s involved with every script, gives a lot of insights and thoughts. The great thing about the story that we’re telling is it’s Monica’s story, which I think needs to be told. Just like [in ‘The People v. O.J. Simpson’] we showed Marcia Clark in a different way, that’s what we’re doing with Monica.”
While Impeachment has not yet been released, it does share a lot of similarities with the O.J. Simpson story, where the male celebrity is reprieved in the midst of a scandalous act while the unknown female is treated as a scapegoat and subject to more contempt. While Lewinsky has since rose in prominence thanks to her activism and speaking engagements, she was previously on the receiving end of ferocious pubic attention, and suffered public shaming and cyberbullying for decades after the scandal. Meanwhile Clinton, despite impeachment, was acquitted by the Senate and remained in office to finish out his term.
With the upcoming installment of American Crime Story being told from Lewinsky’s perspective, it can serve as a platform for Lewinsky to share her side of the affair. The two previous seasons of the anthology series have been met with acclaim, with both winning Emmy Awards for Outstanding Limited Series. Impeachment: American Crime Story is expected to premiere on FX later in 2021 and with Lewinsky’s heavy involvement, the show is sure to offer a whole different outlook on the notorious scandal.
